A hydraulic pump is a mechanical device that converts mechanical power into hydraulic energy (the gif below helps visualize how that looks). But basically, the pump produces liquid movement or flow not direct pressure. However, this flow is necessary for the development of pressure up to 10,000 psi, which is a function of resistance to the fluid flow in the system.
Thus, your pumping action creates a vacuum at the pump inlet which allows atmospheric pressure to force liquid from the reservoir, through the pump, and inevitably through the outlet. That pressure moving through the unit creates the hydraulic system that allows you to lift tons with a simple arm pumping motion or automatically with the assistance of air, electric or gasoline motors, seen within their product line.
